OVERVIEW
The feeling of incomplete evacuation of stool may be experienced as constipation. A person may complain: Bowel movements less than 3 per week, hard & lumpy stools, needing to strain excessively, having to attend toilet frequently to clear the bowel, or feeling bloated.
Occasional constipation is common & may be caused by less fluid intake, low fiber & more refined food, travel & certain medicines, which get relieved by a correction in food& water intake, etc.
Recent onset of constipation lasting for several weeks, stomach pain, blood & mucus in stool, anemia & weight loss are alarming signs which need serious attention. These signs may be due to. Colon Cancer, Stricture or narrowing of intestine due to various causes like:TB, Crohns disease, diverticulitis etc
Very long-standing constipation is usually due to the slow passage of stool in the intestine or constipation-predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) & Obstructed Defecation. This needs further tests like stool examination, Colonoscopy, or Ano Rectal Manometry. The doctor may advise Blood & stool tests, Colonoscopy ultrasound, or CT Scan. Home remedies: Few people may require mild laxatives like Isapgul & Cremaffin.
Long-standing constipation not responding to change in diet & mild laxatives.
